Itinerary
With 8 days cruising the islands and striving to encounter lots of ocean life along the way, we can pack a lot of adventures in. Every week is unique, as it all depends on the weather and what the whales are up to, but to give you an idea of how the trip will go:
On the first day, we welcome you aboard, and you get settled into your cabins. Captain Sam will run through a bit about the boat and safety. We will then get underway out of town, and Dior will run through a whale swim briefing and other household details. We will head out into the islands and begin the adventure!
Every day on the ocean is different, and we never know what will happen or what we’ll see, so there's only so much planning we can do. We leave anchorage early every morning and spend the next 7 hours interacting with whales.
We aim to anchor at a different island every night; most of the time it depends on what we have done and seen that day as to where we end up for the night, but the beauty of a liveaboard is that we have our home wherever we go. Often we will explore remote islands, snorkel the coral reefs, visit villages and much more!
On the last night of the charter, we will be anchored closer to town again. After breakfast the next morning, we will drop you back ashore to the airport or your accommodation.
*Itineraries are subject to change due to weather, as safety is our priority.

We can cater to all sorts of dietary requirements, just let us know ahead of time.

Wildlife is a beautiful sailing catamaran built for performance and comfort. She sails comfortably and fast, although we motor most of the day when interacting with whales and other marine life.
Wildlife has three guest cabins with king-size beds, hatches for fresh air, and a small fan; swim towels and fresh shower towels will be provided.
She also has two lovely living spaces: the outside area (cockpit) for hanging out, reading, after-swim chilling and dining. Also, most importantly, the area you will be getting ready for swims. The inside saloon area is a dry-only area with a nice couch to get comfy on.
The kitchen (for our chef only) is upstairs and quite large, where all the wonderful smells will be drifting around.
Wildlife has a desalitnator to make water from the ocean. We have a good supply of water, but it is very important to be conservative; one lovely hot shower at the end of each day for each person is ideal. The head (shower and toilet) is upstairs and pretty simple.
The deck area is the best place to see and capture everything: islands, volcanoes, whales, an epic sunset, flying fish. You never know what you’ll see, so grab a beanbag and relax!

The Kingdom of Tonga is a breeding ground for Humpback whales. During the winter months, July through to October the waters of Tonga are home for many whales. They are here to mate and give birth in the safe, warm waters of the islands.
At Whale Discoveries we believe in minimising our impact on the world around us and the creatures that call it home. We have a huge respect for the ocean and environment and that strongly influences our operations.
When it comes to interacting with whales we want to be respectful and create a positive experience for us and them. We like to take it slow, assess the whales and approach them non-intrusively, if they aren’t displaying an interest in us we will leave them be. We strive for mutual interactions and to leave them the way we found them, swimming happily!
Whale swimming is regulated by the Ministry of Tourism in Tonga and we strictly adhere to the rules and regulations, some of these include;
Seven hours a day to interact and swim with whales
Ninety minutes is permitted to spend with mum and calf pairs
No freediving is permitted when swimming with whales
We respect the guidelines set out by the Tonga whale-watch industry and aim to create a team minded experience. Any guest displaying disrespect towards the whales, our crew or other guests will not be permitted to continue whale swimming or may be asked to disembark the boat.
Day 1:
Your adventure has begun! Welcome to Whale Discoveries Tonga.
10am Board SY Wildlife, our beautiful catamaran, for your live-aboard charter. The yacht will be along-side at the Pangai wharf in the small boat harbour. We will conduct an orientation and safety briefing with morning tea being served. Accommodation is in 3 comfortable double berth cabins, with a shared bathroom. Aboard Wildlife there are many areas to enjoy the scenery, relax on the deck, in the cockpit and in the saloon. You will enjoy 3 delicious home cooked meals a day while on board.
Day 1 - Day 7:
Sail amongst the pristine islands of the Ha’apai Island group, swimming with the whales and marine fauna, exploring the islands, visiting the villages of the outer islands and more! Each night will be spent at an island anchorage (decided by the Captain) based on the weather conditions and the best whale swimming opportunities. This usually equates to being in the right spot at the right time!
Day 8:
After a scrumptious breakfast we disembark Wildlife at 10am in the Pangai harbour Ha’apai.
Price for 2027 trips:
$23,000 NZD per cabin (2 persons) for 8 days / 7 nights on board SY Wildlife. This includes 3 wholesome, delicious meals a day, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages (tea, coffee and coconuts) and all whale swims while on board SY Wildlife.
Not Included in this expedition:
Travel insurance (required)
All airfares, airport taxes, visas, fees and excess baggage
Snorkelling equipment
Itineraries are subject to change when consideration of weather conditions and safety are key factors. We operate and respect the guidelines set out by the Tonga whale-watch industry and any guest displaying disrespect for the whales, our crew or other guests will be returned to shore immediately.
About our vessel Wildlife
Welcome to the live-aboard sailing catamaran experience in the outback of Tonga.
Wildlife is a high performance blue water sailing catamaran. She is a 16.2m Schionning Waterline built of state-of-the-art materials. She is fast, safe, stable and comfortable. This enables us to travel through the very remote parts of Tonga with all the comforts of home and be self-reliant. The vessel was purchased by Tris and Dave in 2012 for the specific purpose of live-aboard whale-swim charters in Tonga.
Wildlife is powered by brand new 35hp Lombadini Diesel engines in each hull. This pushes her along at a good speed of 7knts, however, when the sails go up, she effortlessly sails at 11 to 20knts! Wildlife has recently been upgraded to run on lithium batteries and with her solar panel array increased she runs completely electric (no generator) making her a very environmentally friendly way to travel. Fresh water is made by a desalinator that runs off one of the main engines providing enough drinking and shower water for all onboard - we never need to rely on finding a water source although we do encourage the conservative use of water and power. There is one shared large bathroom and toilet, conveniently located so it can be accessed from the cockpit. This enables access to the toilet when you have been swimming, with no need to change to get down stairs. Wildlife is a simply designed with bright, clean spaces and runs very efficiently. We love living on-board and the adventures we have together and we’re sure you will too.
Wildlife on-board accommodation and facilities
There are 3 roomy double cabins, each with their own large opening hatch providing natural light and fresh air. The beds are set up as king doubles but a divider can be added for single share occupancy. Being on the ocean 24/7 has definite advantages for the whale enthusiast - some nights you can hear the whale song through your pillow!
The large saloon is the indoor living area. Here you will find a comfortable couch area with 2 small tables - a perfect area to chill out and still take in the spectacular ocean views. The Galley is also located in this space and is the heart of live-aboard life.
The cockpit is where everything happens! This is the outdoor entertaining area where all meals are served and most people love to hang in the fresh ocean air and watch the crew raise and lower sails and navigate. The cockpit is also the action hub, where we get ready for swims and adventures, leading down to the transom steps and into the water. The transom steps allow for safe and easy access to and from the water.
The deck area provides a perfect vantage place to watch your friends with the whales and take as many fluke photographs as possible. Relax in a deck bean bag or lay on the foredeck nets and feel the gentle rhythm of the Pacific Ocean. Keep a watch for marine life and gaze seaward as islands slide by. There is plenty of space to relax and enjoy the views. It is a very exclusive way to visit Tonga and experience swimming with the majestic whales.
